Palau Güell

In 1885, Eusebi Güell gave Antoni Gaudí his first commission, the Palau Güell in Barcelona. It is a city house with every possible luxury, yet it is in one of Barcelona's most popular (and run-down) districts at the time: the Raval district. It is located on Carrer Nou de la Rambla in Barcelona's El Raval area, Catalonia, Spain. It is part of the "Works of Antoni Gaudí" UNESCO World Heritage Site. While the façade appears simple and almost devoid of adornment, the breathtaking inside is a pleasant surprise, which will make your visit worthwhile.

Palau Guell Highlights

The Facade

Gaudí created a basic yet bright façade that shines out in the neighborhood, despite the fact that it is located on a tiny street with limited vistas. Edén Concert music hall, which specialized in concerts and variety performances, opened two years before Güell Palace was completed. Gaudí's work, particularly the façade he built, became a method to balance off the grandeur of the music hall and the district in general.

Ground Floor

Stables for horses and servants' lodgings were located on the lower floor. Two spiral ramps connected the upper and lower floors. The horse-drawn carriages were able to enter the home through two huge, oval doors. The horses' ramp led to the basement from the wagon hall in the back.

Main Floor

The workrooms and library for the landlords Eusebi Güell, as well as other administrative offices, were located on the main level. The great entrance hall is also placed on this floor, from which a grand staircase leads to the Beletage, the landlord's family house. On the main level of the house, there is also a tribune on the north side that protects the house's entrances.

Second Floor

The family's private chambers were on the second level, set around the window gallery to the big salon. The attic used to hold the house staff and supply rooms, such as the kitchen, pantry, and washrooms. A long steep needle covers the dome of the great salon and 20 ceramic-decorated chimneys on the terrace.

Iconic Roof Terrace

The roof terrace is one of the most recognizable features of Palau Guell. The most striking part of your visit to the roof would be discovering the chimneys that are decorated with mosaic artwork and tiles. There are a total of 20 chimneys on the roof terrace of Palau Guell.

The Basement

One of the most fascinating places in the basement is the horse stable. The odd pillars and vaults here create a stunning panorama while also serving as a crucial and accessible portion of the structure's substructure. The stables could also be accessed via a spiral ramp, another evidence of Gaudi's creativity.
